Amesoeurs amesoeurs rar
Review Summary: Amesoeurs by Amesoeurs is a good debut album. Too bad it's also the last one. Still, it could have used some more finishing work. Rank: 0 for The new Amesoeurs album seems to have split opinions among the old listeners. Some feel like it's a bad The Cure - rip-off and the worst project of Neige so far, while others simply love it. I just like it. The album starts off with Gas in Veins, which is simply a great atmospheric intro.
It build up slowly with a simple, but effective riff accompanied by a blast beat. The albums continues with tracks of varying quality. Les Ruches Malades is good, but surprisingly I feel like the older demo version of the song is better in most aspects.
Especially the vocals are duller. Luckily this isn't enough to make a good song bad. The follow-up "Heurt" though, is just rubbish. The riffs and melodies are ok, but Audrey's singing is at its worst here and the effect used on her voice doesn't make any favours.
The unpleasant screaming at 2. I'm actually quite baffled by Aydrey's performance on these first tracks. Fortunately she significantly improves her performance on the second half of the album, which I'm grateful for. Recueillement introduces Neige on vocals for the first time and is much better than the previous song although not the top of the album. The screaming vocals are a bit off-place here, but that's more of a personal preference I guess.
The follower Faux Semblants is much lighter and depends strongly on Audrey's singing, which works very well here. Neige is on vocals again. This is also propably as metal as this album gets. Video Girl and La Reine Trayeuse are the first songs to have actual chorus hooks in them.
These are also the most likely parts of the album to stay on your head later on. Well, atleast for me they were. Sadly, 'Amesoeurs' is not the masterpiece debut album that I hoped for at the back of my mind, but it has manages to achieve a sound of its own, which for a supergroup, is a rare achievement in itself.
Although Amesoeurs has long been labelled as a black metal band, the self-titled debut does not embrace the style completely. Instead of being 'black metal', or even metal in general, 'Amesoeurs' might best be compared with alot of shoegaze and post-punk bands. Upbeat drum beats, melodic guitar leads and Audrey Sylvain's soft voice are about as far from black metal as mandarin oranges are from devastating oil spills in the Pacific Ocean?
Regardless, for those craving a harder edged sound, there are some faster-paced sections that verge on the tremolo picking of black metal, although things rarely get any heavier than Alcest's work with 'Souvenirs d'un Autre Monde'. Amesoeurs definitely feels like the work of a couple of musicians who each have their own ideas of what they want the band to be.
This results in a shift between graciously mid-tempo tunes, more upbeat post-punk parts, and the occasional return to the black metal sound of 'Ruines Humaines'. Whoever wanted Amesoeurs to go the mellow route seems to have prevailed however, because this album favours the lighter side more than anything else.
The execution of 'Amesoeurs' is impressively consistent from the black metal elements to their lightest segments, but the way they approach this dynamic does not sit well with me. Amesoeurs have a strong sound to them, but the lean towards slower songs can lead the album to get a little more tedious than it should have been.
Of course, 'Amesoeurs' should not be approached as a metal album, and as long as one isn't expecting a dark black metal record a la Peste Noire, there is impressive beauty to digest here. One key element of Amesoeurs' release is the vocal work of Audrey Sylvain, ensuring that the music retains its sense of melody, despite the driving, heavy guitar work.
The delicate grace of her voice matches up well with the quieter, cleaner instrumental passages, whilst at the same time producing a pleasingly highlighted contrast to the chundering metal on display the rest of the time. I would note that this album is not as 'progressive', or, at least, not as daringly inventive as Neige's recent work with Alcest. Posted by Anonymous at PM No comments:. Its awfully hard as a new, unknown blog to keep posting when it feels like there is no one who reads your work. Recently i have noticed that our site traftic has gone from 0 people a day, to 2 people a day. Quite the victory! But beyond that we would love it if you left a comment, or even bookmarked us as your interest would help motivate us to post.

I would atribute this disparity to the bands relitive youth, and egerness to be edgey and different. Posted by Goose at PM No comments:. Labels: experimental , punk. This is a great album.
